Course Purpose

The Advanced MMO course prepares participants to operate independently as a competent MMO on offshore and marine projects. Emphasis is placed on decision-making, mitigation implementation, and real-time communication with vessel crews and project teams.

Learning Outcomes

Participants completing this level will be able to:

• Perform independent MMO duties onboard vessels

• Identify marine mammals to species level in real sea conditions

• Interpret complex behaviours related to operational risk

• Implement pre-start, soft start, delay, and shutdown procedures

• Assess environmental factors affecting detectability

• Maintain full MMO logs, mitigation records, and reports

• Liaise confidently with Masters, survey managers, and HSE staff

Phase 1 – Online Advanced Theory

• Advanced species identification & behaviour

• Operational risk assessment

• Detailed mitigation frameworks

• Data quality, reporting standards, and compliance

Phase 2 – Onboard Operational Training

• Independent observation watches

• Live mitigation decision-making

• Full documentation and reporting exercises

Entry Requirement

• Successful completion of Basic MMO
  or documented equivalent experience
