The Basic MMO course provides the foundational knowledge and core practical skills required to begin working as a Marine Mammal Observer under supervision. It focuses on species awareness, basic observation techniques, and standard mitigation measures.
This level is suitable for participants new to MMO work or transitioning from marine biology or environmental backgrounds.
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
Understand the role and responsibilities of an MMO
Identify common marine mammals to species or group level
Conduct basic visual observations from vessels
Recognise behaviours that increase collision or disturbance risk
Apply standard mitigation measures under instruction
Complete basic MMO logs and sighting records
Communicate observations clearly to senior MMOs or vessel crew
